I really like that review I very much enjoy EDF (though I do prefer 2017 to 2025), but the review captures the irreverent essence of the games very well Cara may not have particularly liked the game herself, but she described it in a way which made it clear (to me, at least) that I would. I love EDF 2025, it's one of my all time favouites and I'm still playing it 7 years later. The only review I can think of that really annoyed me was Eurogamer's EDF 2025 review which was basically the reviewer and whoever okayed it for publication saying "this game is beneath our contempt." My reaction was "Why the FUCK were we playing Contra when we could playing THIS?", even though in retrospect Contra is clearly a different thing than Quake rather than a more primitive version of the same thing, although that said Contra is probably a more accomplished game than the single player mode of Quake. I remember going round to a friends house in the nineties and playing Contra III for ages, at which point the friend suddenly revealed he also had Quake on his PC. Nowadays, they're recognised as being an alternate style of game that's just as valid as doing an open world 3D game, but at the time, when you were faced with something like Ultima Underworld with its vast realtime 3D world that you can climb, swim and fight your way through, deep systemic gameplay, NPC interaction, and actual physics engine, it would be hard not to see that as being obviously better than another 2D platform game. In 1993, 2D games were explicitly the past. It was like "Does this game show me the future?" And if the answer from the reviewer was no then it had failed.įast forward to the modern day and Edge is still reviewing games inspired by Gunstar Heroes and Super Metroid. They weren't judging them on their own merits. The magazine was finding its feet and was set up to showcase "the future" and there really was a sense that these games were relics. I think Edge's treatment of 2D 16-bit games in its early days is understandable.
